1962 Balenciaga Cocktail Dress
France

This 1962 cocktail dress by Balenciaga is crazy beautiful. After seeing it, we can absolutely imagine why the Countess Mona Bismarck shut herself in her bedroom and refused to come out for days after learning that Balenciaga retired.

A similar dress is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. The cut of the dress is determined and precise. The bodice is cut narrow and small to the body while the outer skirt, lined in net, puffs out for that dramatic but severe look that Balenciaga did so beautifully.

The dress is as beautiful on the inside as the outside. If we could own only one dress, no doubt, this is the one that we would want.
